Dakar Rally alternative starting today - 20.04.2008
Budapest (HN4U) - The disappointment of the participants and the public who was regretting the cancellation of the annual Dakar Rally in 2008, which is a premier in the history of Dakar, didn’t last long. ASO, the leader getter of the Dakar Rally hurried to equilibrate the situation with initiating a new competition, named Dakar Series. The first of these series, which is meant to replace the legendary rally championship, starts today from Budapest, it’s named Central Europe’s Rally and is held in Hungary and Romania. The next of the series will be organized in Spain, in September.
The first division will start in Budapest, but will end in a second country, Romania, in Baia Mare city. The next day, the participants will have to drive between Baia Mare and the next checkpoint, Sovata. The third division will be in the nearby of Sovata on rocky terrain.
The participants then will head back to Hungary, where other three devisions will be held, the last checkpoint being Balatonfured city. The total distance the participants will have to drive is 3.300 km, this includes 1.650 km’s of special devision.
The pilots are very restive to show off their knowledge, this is proven by the high number of participants and the fact that all the factory-teams like Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, Hummer, Opel, BMW and Schlesser amongst the cars and KTM amongst the motorcycles, which are usually participating on the Dakar Rally has already signed in. This way, the rally fans from Hungary and Romania will have the opportunity to encourage pilots like Stephane Peterhansel, Carlos Sainz, or even Cyrill Despress. More than 200 vehicles are waited to the rally, mostly cars, but also many motorcycles and trucks, the ASO representative for East Europe, Balazs Szalay said.
The great advantage for the teams is, that the vehicles for this rally won’t have to be heavily modified, because the special devisions resembles the original Dakar Rally. For example, in Hungary the pilots will compete on sandy terrain like in the Portugal, while in Sovata’s nearby on rocky terrain like in Maroc. The only difference is that the roads are tighter and the presence of the trees on the roads’ margin requires greater attention.
